Vital Work Remains in Egypt, Across the Middle East

President Hosni Mubarak has resigned, but human rights remains a critical issue in Egypt and the Middle East.

In Iran, Yemen, and Bahrain, government security forces have cracked down violently on peaceful protesters demanding their rights and showing their solidarity with Egyptians. Demonstrators have been killed, arrested, targeted with stun guns, and beaten.

Human Rights Watch is actively monitoring developments in the Middle East, and we will continue to report our findings.

The victories won by the peaceful protest movements in Egypt and Tunisia have given many people hope for a better future. But we need more than just a change in leadership – we need an end to repression. The military should lift the state of emergency in Egypt, and we’re calling for Tunisia and Egypt to stop using torture and allow freedom of expression and assembly.
