Sharp Rise in Attacks Against Journalists in West Bank, Gaza
Last year, the Palestinian Authority detained Muhannad Salahat, a freelance journalist and filmmaker, for 14 days, interrogating him and subjecting him to solitary confinement for days on end. “They were concerned because I have worked with Al Jazeera, which had been doing shows about Palestinian Authority corruption,” said Salahat. He was never charged with a crime.
A new Human Rights Watch report documents how Palestinian security forces in both the West Bank and Gaza have arbitrarily detained, beaten, and tortured journalists. They have also confiscated equipment, like cameras, and barred journalists from crossing their borders.
