Famine has been officially declared in parts of Somalia as the whole of the Horn of Africa deals with the worst drought in over half a century. Severe food shortages, armed conflict, and corruption plague Somalia – a country that for years has been the center stage of the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis.” RI continues to call attention to millions of Somalis who have been uprooted by violence and are now struggling to find food. Thousands stream daily into neighboring countries that are facing their own food shortages, and many of those Somalis arrive severely malnourished and dehydrated. This crisis is not going to end any time soon. RI is calling on the U.S. government to ease current administrative restrictions on aid agencies so that lifesaving assistance can reach those most in need in the coming months.
