Welcome to Nika

Have you head of Nika Water? A featured non-profit org of More Than Me Global, Nika has been featured on this blog several times, so I'm sure you've seen them around. If you haven't, allow me to introduce you:

"Through the sale of our premium bottled water, NIKA hopes to bring a voice to the world’s poor who suffer without the basic right to clean water and simple sanitation. And by donating 100% of our profits to support clean water projects in impoverished countries, NIKA will provide the basic tools and critical assistance to help thousands of families improve their lives in a meaningful way and end the cycle of poverty. Our goal is to create awareness and knowledge to serve as a catalyst for thousands of youth to get involved in our quest to bring clean water to the impoverished world.

Mindful of our duties as stewards of the Earth, NIKA has been certified as CarbonFree® by Carbonfund.org through our investment in carbon offsetting programs such as a reforestation project in Nicaragua. In addition, NIKA has developed a very unique recycling program where we pay high schools around the country a small fee for each plastic bottle that the school collects and recycles. Through this "One-for-One Recycling Program," our aim is not only to be plastic bottle neutral but an advocate of the importance and simplicity of basic recycling as well.

Our founders are a group of seasoned business executives who have successfully built and expanded for-profit businesses and who now share a common focus of creating social and environmentally responsible businesses that can be used to help solve global problems. Our founders have funded all of NIKA's startup and launch/operating losses and will realize no compensation or economic benefit from NIKA's operations. We are committed to making NIKA truly the most ethical bottled water brand on the market."

With the warm summer months approaching, commit to ONLY drinking Nika Water this year and make a difference in the process!

GlobalGiving Highlight of the Week: Haiti

GLOBALGIVING HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK: HAITI

Since the massive earthquake in 2010, Haiti has struggled to recover. They are still in desperate need of aid in several areas including basic sanitation, clean water, proper housing, medical supplies, and support for thousands of orphaned children.  GlobalGiving is currently featuring 66 projects in Haiti- these are just a few of my favorites:

Increase Job Opportunities in Port au Prince

Provide medical care to Haitian orphans

Vehicle to Transport Disabled Kids in Haiti

Equip the new Mirebalais Hospital in Haiti

A donation as small as $15 will make a huge difference to any one of these projects. You can also set up a monthly or yearly donation if you'd like! I know that every little bit counts, especially to some of these projects that are SO CLOSE to meeting their goal!

Excited about this NEW development!

INTRODUCING:
CHARITY: WATER'S NEW GOOGLE TRACKING WATER PROJECTS SITE

PROVING IT: GOOGLE MAPS

At charity: water, we've always believed in the power of proof. We use 100% of all public donations to directly fund water projects for communities in need, and we prove each one using GPS coordinates on Google Maps.
This map shows all completed charity: water projects to date. If you don't see your project, this may mean it's still under construction. It takes 18 months to fully complete, and report back on a charity: water project.

GlobalGiving Highlight of the Week: Mexico

I'm so excited to announce my new project!!

Starting this week, GlobalGiving and I will be highlighting one country, area, or issue that is in need of attention. We'll give you an array of opportunities to help out, so if you find that the issue or country is near and dear to your heart, just follow the links to learn more and give generously. And if there is something or somewhere you'd like to see us highlight, leave it in the comments and I'll make sure we add it to our list.
As always, thank you for making a difference!

GlobalGiving Highlight of the Week: MEXICO

I absolutely love Mexico. My husband was born and raised there and we've spent a lot of time visiting his family and exploring up and down Baja.

Unfortunately, between the drug wars, slowing tourism, even slower economy, negative US influences, and poverty levels, it's a struggling country these days. So I'm always on the lookout for ways to help.

Here's a round-up of my favorite GlobalGiving projects currently going on in Mexico:

Microfinance for Marginalized Communities, Mexico

A donation as small as $10 will make a big difference for any one of these projects {some of which are very close to meeting their goal!}, so don't hesitate, even if you only have a little to share. As our neighboring country, only good can come to both of us if Mexico continues improving the lives of it's people. And we can help.

My Rig!!

The rig you funded drilled its first well!

Last September you fundraised, donated and came to a birthday party -- all to help us raise money for two new drilling rigs in Tigray, Ethiopia. Although we've helped 1,600 communities and more than 600,000 people here already, two million people in this region are still waiting for clean water. We need to go faster.

Thanks to your passion and hard work, now we can.
The Rig Video
A few weeks ago, the first of the two rigs broke ground drilling its first well in Merara Village. Hours into the drill, it hit a massive aquifer of pure ground water. Soon, 450 lives here will change. And that's just the beginning.

Each rig will go on to drill 80 new wells, and together they'll change 80,000 lives --every single year for the next 15 years.

We'll soon be mounting a GPS device to each rig so you can track them on a map.
Stay tuned.

amazing news!!

do you remember this?  i was trying to raise awareness and funds for charity: water's september campaign to buy a drilling rig for faster well-digging in africa. about eleven of us bloggers were offered the opportunity to blog about the september campaign, and the top four to bring in the most traffic would get their name engraved on the new rig.

well, i hadn't heard back from them since mid-october, so i wasn't super hopeful that i was one of the lucky four. but then yesterday i got this WONDERFUL email:

It's been a few months since your blog post about charity: water's September Campaign, but I wanted to let you know how much we appreciate your continued support. I'm so happy to let you know that your blog post was one that generated the most traffic to our site on September 30. This means that you've won the chance to have your name on the rig our September Campaign funded this past year for our partners in northern Ethiopia!

We’ll be in touch soon with more details. Once everything is ready to go, you will receive pictures and GPS coordinates so you can follow the impact of your efforts from village to village.

In case you missed it, check out our article about reaching our goal for September Campaign and what that means for the additional 40,000 people per year the rig will help: http://www.charitywater.org/blog/sept-2011-update/

We couldn't have done any of this without your support. I'm looking forward to seeing your name on the rig!

Best,

charity: water

We couldn’t have done any of it without you. We're so thankful for all the amazing ways you help us bring clean drinking water to people in need around the world.

THANK YOU!

Help us give 800,000 people clean water this year

Help us give 800,000 people clean water this year.
We've had an amazing year so far. Our water programs team has scoured the globe, blazing the trail for charity: water to expand. They've slept on planes, in airports, in tents and in villages. They've traveled on dusty roads to some of the most remote places in the world to meet people in need of clean drinking water -- and find solutions to help them. But the year isn't over yet, and we need your help to finish strong.

So before 2011 wraps up, we want to tell you about three programs we're excited about, and ask for your help funding them. If we can pull it off, we'll have the largest year in the history of charity: water, helping almost 800,000 people get access to clean water this year alone. That's more than one person every minute.

If we reach our goals, our partner Concern Worldwide will install 6 wells that will help 3,000 people in the D.R.C.

The D.R.C. is ranked the least developed nation in the world. And the Manono and Pweto areas in the south are some of the most remote in the country. The people here are used to fending for themselves. They've suffered through years of conflict and isolation.

Cholera outbreaks are common here from contaminated water and lack of sanitation.  But they can be prevented if we drill clean water wells, and train communities on safe hygiene and sanitation practices.

Bangladesh is being poisoned. A large aquifer running under several regions here is contaminated with naturally-occurring arsenic at alarming levels. Many wells installed in the 1960s are no longer safe to use.

The handles of these wells have been painted red to discourage people from using them, but when your other choice is to drink water from a swamp, you might take your chances. Arsenic poisoning causes skin lesions, skin cancer and cancer of the internal organs.

With your help, we hope to fund 218 wells in communities and schools in Bangladesh, serving more than 60,000 people with clean water. These wells will draw from a deeper, arsenic-free aquifer. Water will be tested before community use.

If we hit our goals, we can begin investing in three large-scale water systems which will help 7,000 people in Honduras.

Our local partner in Honduras, Water for People, is changing the game. They're not afraid of trying new things and their bold commitment called Everyone promises that when they start working in a region, they don't leave until everyone has access to safe water and sanitation.

Everyone means every household, every person, every school and every clinic. Here in Honduras, we want to fund three large-scale water systems in the Ilama and San Antonio de Cortes regions. These systems will bring clean water close to everyone's homes through a network of pipes and tap stands.

Three ways you can help us fund these programs.

All donations to charity: water will help us fund these programs and several others by the end of 2011. Our goal is to provide 800,000 people with clean drinking water this year.

As always, 100% of every dollar will directly fund work on the ground.
